A. Creative Ideas: for opening scenes in movies

This section lists creative ideas in different fields and subjects: products, services, personal life and more.
If a particular subject interests you, please tell me so I may try to include it in upcoming issues.

A friend of mine is a screenplay writer, and he told me how hard it was to find creative ideas when writing a screenplay. I decided to dedicate this first section to trying to help him.

Here are a few creative ideas for the opening scenes of movies:

• Show three short consecutive scenes showing the same action, but with different emphasis:
  • Emotional emphasis (e.g. the hero tells us what s/he feels about what is happening)
  • Rational emphasis (e.g. a neutral storyteller describes the scene in a factual manner)
  • Physical emphasis (e.g. highlight the attributes of the scenery, setting or people involved)
    
• Show the hero searching for things on the Internet that have to do with his/her major problem, and they do it in a way that reflects their personality, for instance:
  • Someone who falls in love too quickly, looks for romantic ideas for a date, and is excited and moved by some of the things s/he finds, and starts to daydream
  • A hero trying to lose weight, looks for "easy diets" while eating from a bowl of icecream
  • Someone who is obsessed with organization and order, makes a thorough research of ways to kill his disorganized mother-in-law, writing down every small detail
    
• For a light thriller movie - a scene in which the camera itself plays "hide-and-seek" with the hero. It counts from 1 to 10 (with animation of numbers), and then starts to look around for the hero. The hero does not have to be aware of the "game" or the camera but simply goes about their normal activities, just "happening" to be hard to find. The theme of childrens' games may be repeated again later in the movie (a game of "Catch", or "Charades", for example).

B. Creative Tool: Surrounding Circles

Many creative ideas are reached by finding different ways to look at a product, service, process or problem.
One of the first things you should do when trying to come up with new ideas, is to take a better and more comprehensive look at the subject you are dealing with and its surroundings or environment.

A simple drawing can help you map the subject and its surrounding:

• Draw a circle in the center of the page, and write down the subject and the components it is made of.
• Draw a bigger circle around it, and write down the things that have physical or immediate contact with the subject.
• Continue to draw 2 or 3 more circles, listing things that are further away from the subject, or that are related to other things on the inner circles.
• To come up with creative ideas - you should start moving things around the circles, for example - bringing things from the outer circles inside, or connecting things between circles.

In upcoming issues I will describe more detailed tools that help manipulate the things on these circles in order to come up with creative ideas.

I was surprised and delighted to discover this website, which suggests an annual Creativity Day celebration on April 21st. This celebration was started in started in 2001, and currently includes many communities and people from around the globe.
